Management vs Leadership

Is there a difference between leadership and management? Yes - there is. Leadership and management are two distinct concepts that often overlap, and they're not the same thing.

Managers work to get their employees to do what they did yesterday, but a little faster and a little cheaper.

Leadership is about inspiring people to take action, influencing their behavior in positive ways, and helping them reach their full potential.

Managers want authority. Leaders take responsibility.

At their core, managers tell people what to do while leaders show them the way. Managers focus on day-to-day operations while leaders look forward - thinking about where they can take their organization in the future.

Can an organization function efficiently without either leaders or managers or are both roles essential for success?

We need both. And, we must be careful not to confuse them.

Reminder ... Leaders are scarce and thus more valuable.
